Personality: Rufus is the product of his environment: he was raised to rule the world, in a cold business setting of glass and steel, with trained killers for babysitters. He is icy, sophisticated, intelligent, and canny. He likes order, and expects obedience. Murder, treachery, sabotage, and lies are the tools of his trade, and he employs them from behind the scenes with an almost elegant precision. At the same time, he is still very young, and has been isolated for most of his life. When he first became president, he was still curiously immature, with an over-blown sense of entitlement, self-confidence, and a subconscious belief that he was untouchable, immortal. Later, however, he lost his company— which was all he had known and all he had striven to obtain —along with most of the vision in his left eye in an explosion. Not long after that, he contracted a fatal illness which, until he was cured, left him largely dependant upon a wheelchair and the four employees he had left: the Turks, his trained killers and erstwhile babysitters of yore. Faced with his own mortality, Rufus learned patience, and the fine art of working within his limitations to achieve a goal. He also learned humility, to the point of occasional, private spells of crippling self-doubt. Curiously, however, his sense of entitlement remains almost completely unscathed. He keeps his thoughts and feelings largely to himself, saying only what he deems necessary, when he deems it necessary—which is not to say he is always calm and collected, as there are a number of things capable of making him snap. He is more likely to show annoyance and anger than anything else. He’s also a bit mad, in very subtle ways. Perhaps very faintly suicidal, except that his determination to prove the world wrong is enough to keep him going. Still, he has a habit of contemplating heights from not-so-secure perches, much to the dismay of his bodyguards, and a penchant for throwing himself into high-risk situations. Of note is his deeply ingrained need for his father’s approval, warring with his desire to spite the old man in every way imaginable. Now that his father is dead, Rufus unconsciously measures his decisions against what he believes his old man would and wouldn’t approve of, and the conclusion he comes to often affects his actions.
Special abilities/talents: He can fire a double-barrel shotgun one-handed and not only not break his wrist, but also usually hit what he’s aiming for, and is in fact familiar with a wide variety of firearms. His aim did suffer a great deal when he lost most of the vision in his left eye. Rufus’ true strength, however, is in his wits: carefully planned or on the fly, he’s almost always able to charm, intimidate, manipulate, or loophole his way into or out of just about anything. This stems from a keen ability to read people and situations, and a thorough understanding of human nature. He is a natural leader.
Quirks: Rufus is borderline obsessive-compulsive when it comes to his appearance. Perhaps this is most obvious in his choice of clothing: a white suit shows every speck of dust and dirt, yet Rufus manages to keep these suits immaculate all day, every day. He’s not actually immune to dirt, though, and with limited resources, the illusion may not be so easy to maintain. Keeping himself in perfect order will be much more difficult. He has been down on his luck before, so he’s also not completely unfamiliar with looking like a normal human being, but that doesn’t mean he likes it. The impulse to control his image extends to how he behaves. For the most part, every move and gesture is calculated to elicit a certain response from his audience. A simple guess would have this obsession the result of growing up in the public eye. For all that he is self-sufficient in the big ways, when it comes to the little things, Rufus doesn’t really get it. He couldn’t differentiate between a washing machine and a dishwasher if his life depended on it, let alone operate either of them. Odds are he couldn’t tell you how to go about getting an article of clothing dry-cleaned, either, beyond “give it to someone who does know.” Most of his clothes were hand tailored and original, with none of that “finding something in his size” nonsense. What pre-made clothing he did own was purchased by an employee. As far as food goes, the most complicated thing he has ever made is slightly-burnt toast and coffee. Grocery shopping is entirely beyond him. Though he’s had to learn many of the basics in the years following the downfall of his company, there’s still a great deal he never took a big enough interest in to understand. He could probably figure most of it out… given time. Rufus is habitually cagey—a habit learned for his own safety. On the flip-side, information-gathering is a way of life for him. He likes to ask questions—and observe. Rufus is not very good with any authority but his own. Being raised to rule the world can do that to you. If he is not obeyed, he may take it as an insult, depending on the circumstances and how well he understands the “disobedient” party’s character. Discovering that he has been pressed into service for some “Satan” character—and that he can’t do jack crap about it –is not going to go over well. Like many workaholics, Rufus has an unhealthy dependency upon coffee. No coffee = very, very grumpy Mr. President. The vision in Rufus’ left eye is not very good. It’s definitely possible to sneak up on him, but anyone who does that will be subjected to the Rufus Glare™ which has lost none of its venom just because he can’t see as well.
Background Information: At (just barely) 21 years old, Rufus inherited ShinRa Electric Company upon the death of his father. SEC was an obscenely powerful, evil mega-company with a monopoly on the world’s energy, essentially making Rufus, young as he was, President of the world. While in office, Rufus was antagonized by an evil psychopath with some serious mommy issues, and a rag-tag band of misfits off to stop said psychopath from smashing the planet with his pet space-rock. Late in the game, Rufus was in his office when a giant, Godzilla-like monster popped out of the ocean (long story) and used its lasers to zap the building he was in to holy hell. Rufus survived, but went into hiding (this involved throwing a blanket over his head,) and secretly helped fund the world’s relief and restoration in the aftermath of the psychopath’s crusade. This should perhaps put points in his good karma box, but his motives are highly suspect, and he still wants to rebuild his evil mega-company, so yeah, no heaven for him. Fun facts (aka spoilers): The rag-tag band of misfits began as an anti-ShinRa terrorist organization called AVALANCHE. AVALANCHE was originally founded 6 years before the original game by a then-15 Rufus, in an attempt to stage the ultimate hostile takeover. Obviously it didn’t go so well. Fortunately for Rufflepuff, though, it was only a few years later when the psychopath with the space rock decided to off his pops, with a great deal more success, so Rufus didn’t have to wait until he was old and withered and, like, 25 to have a mega-corporation of his very own.
Sexual orientation: Rufus considers himself heterosexual, as he believes the feminine form is the more beautiful, though truthfully he’s not above fooling around with either gender. Very, very subconsciously he may simply expect heterosexuality of himself because he knew his father would not approve of anything else, though the question then becomes whether his lack of a true preference came about as a form of rebellion, or because he genuinely does not care either way. I’m inclined to think he’s just genuinely bi, with a slight preference for women.
Reputation: People on Gaia tread carefully around Rufus ShinRa. When he was young, the press made him into a teen idol. Now, however, there’s little chance of the public mistaking him for a pretty-boy figurehead. He is a public figure, recognizable to most, but emotionally he’s very private, and only a very few who are close to him actually know what he is like. The rest afford him a respect born of fear: most hate him, but the average person would be too frightened to be impolite (to his face.)
